Preston Labour has adopted an All Members Meeting structure, which means that our business is decided and managed at meetings that all constituency members are entitled to attend.
Preston Labour is organised into smaller units called branches, which are mainly ward based. At these branch meetings not only can you meet neighbours and make new friends, you can also meet your local Labour councillors and learn what they have been doing to represent their constituents. You also have the power to choose local council candidates to represent your ward at election times and, perhaps most importantly, you can offer your time and energy to help the representatives win the votes. Volunteers are always needed to deliver leaflets, help with canvassing, write campaign leaflets, organise and attend fundraising events, and offer ideas to strengthen Labour's voice in the city.
There are two sets of councillors who make crucial decisions that impact our daily lives here in Preston: Lancashire County Councillors and Preston City Councillors. They decide what the priorities are when it comes to spending their council's budget and these priorities are influenced by their political philosophy. Preston City Council has been controlled by Labour since 1979: the Conservatives have controlled Lancashire County Council since 2017.
Labour has been striving for a better, fairer Britain for over 100 years. And so, when seeking to secure investment in the city or to obtain external funding and when deciding how to spend the annual budget Preston City Councillors have in mind the cross section of residents in Preston: our neighbours struggling with food poverty and poor housing conditions, those whose livelihoods depend on there being a vibrant city centre, and those whose wellbeing will benefit from improved parks and green spaces, for example.
The Conservative government has overseen a policy of austerity since 2009 resulting in budgets being slashed and services severely impacted. Your vote matters!
Preston City Council is run by Labour who have 30 of the 48 available seats. The council operates a 4 year cycle when it comes to electing councillors for the 16 wards across the city.
Year 1: Elections are held to choose 3 councillors in each of the wards.
Year 2: No elections
Year 3: Elections are held for the seat of the councillor who gained the least number of votes in each ward in Year 1.
Year 4: Elections are held for the seat of the councillor who gained the second least number of votes in each ward.
Elections for County Councillors are held every 4 years. Lancashire County Council is currently Conservative controlled. However, Preston is represented by Labour councillors in 6 of the 8 divisions in Preston.
